The article analyzes the approaches existing in modern social sciences to the definition of the concept of «associated state». On this basis it is concluded that the definition of the concept of «associated state» has several different interpretations. The aim of the work is a theoretical and legal analysis of the concept of «associated state», identifying the levels of association. The classification of ways of formation of associated states is proposed. The author’s version of the concept of «associated state» is presented as: a special form of suprastate, state or intra-state relations arising on the basis of the association agreement and providing for the loss of part of the sovereignty while retaining by the people their right to self-determination, independence in dealing with domestic politics, retaining their own constitutions and state apparatus. The aim of the work is a theoretical and legal analysis of the concept of «associated state». The aggravation of contradictions between the world leaders allows us to believe that the real
consequence of this struggle may be the real division of the world into geopolitical clusters of influence, which, in turn, creates the basis for the formation of a threat to the state sovereignty of modern states, a new wave of development of various forms of state dependence. We are talking about such forms as: associated state, satellite state, puppet state, neocolony and protectorate. Similar to each other, but united by one essential feature: the presence of limited power, these forms require a careful analysis in view of their common and distinctive features. We should pay attention to the fact that the terminology of the definition of these forms has been the object of study by political scientists, philologists and historians, which allows us to consider its theoretical and legal interpretation relevant. The concept of «associated state» today does not have a single variant of interpretation and is used in different meanings. Among them, taking into account the above-mentioned subject matter and the nature of association, the following can be defined: a state which is an associated, but partial member, of a super-state entity – Commonwealth or Union; a political-territorial entity which has the attributes of
statehood but forms an association with a unitary or complex (federation, confederation, empire) state on special terms; a special form of intra-state relations. According to the ways of formation and the dynamics of further development we can define the classification of associated states: the path from a subject of a federation to an associated state; the path to obtaining signs of sovereignty: from a colonial possession that had no signs of statehood to the status of associated state; the way of an independent state through an associated state to a subject of a federation; path to accession as a subject of the federation.
